With a sensitive gut like mine, it’s hard to find fruits that I can easily digest. That’s why I love bananas. They are my go-to morning staple. Bananas are packed with fiber and potassium, both of which are essential to happy gut functioning.
Potassium plays a major role in muscle function. Normal gut functioning requires muscular contractions, or the peristaltic wave, to help guide your food through the digestive system. Potassium is a key mineral in keeping this functioning working. Combine that with the high levels of fiber and you’ve got a digestive gem in this little fruit.
I eat a banana with breakfast each morning, but you can enjoy any time of day, any way you like it. Try on its own or in a smoothie.
Here’s a simple recipe for you!
Cocoa Banana Smoothie
1-2 medium bananas
1 tablespoon cocoa powder
Almond milk (or other non-dairy milk)
Optional: almond, cashew or coconut butter
Optional: raw sprouted almonds, about a handful
Optional: hemp or chia seeds, 1-2 tablespoons
Optional: pitted date
3-4 pieces of ice
This is simple. Put all of the ingredients in the blender and go.
Not in the mood for chocolate? Skip it. I realize I gave you lots of “optional” options, but there’s so much you can do with this simple base recipe, the sky’s the limit! Add other favorite fruits like blueberries, raspberries or strawberries. I like adding hemp or chia seeds for an additional nutrition punch. Use any of the mentioned butters for a creamier taste. I try to keep it as simple as possible so I don’t overwhelm my gut.
