You can do more than one thing.
I just have to say that.
You can excel and have interest in more than one thing.
You can love teaching yoga and love mathematics. You can love playing the violin, but also love training for triathlons.
Don’t let anyone ever tell you that you have to love only one thing, for there is not one thing in life to love. Instead, immerse yourself in all of the things that bring you joy and peace and complete you. There are so many more pieces to you than just one. Explore them all.
In fact, it’s more than okay. It’s perfect.
I love teaching yoga, but I also love planning events and making flower arrangements. I’m really good at both. They don’t necessarily go together. For so long I’ve been trying to do one and not the other. When I’m fully immersed in one, I miss the other. So recently I decided to do both.
And you know what? I’m happy.
I’m happy because I don’t have to close that other part of me that is dying to use my hands to create amazing events. I love working with my hands and being creative physically. I’m happy because I no longer need to close my heart off to teaching and writing. I love all of the joys teaching yoga brings.
So I made the decision. I can do both.
I was getting really stuck on what other people were telling me that I was too “all over the place” or “unfocused,” but if you know me then you know that is not me. I’m egregiously focused and organized and I have the capacity to put energy in to multiple areas—if I want to. As I studied Ayurveda, I learned this is part of my nature—this is who I am. All over the place and but also extremely focused.
And there is nothing wrong with that, or me. Or you.
For a while I listened to what other people were saying. “Pick one thing and put the others aside.” But when I did that, my heart broke just a little. I felt like part of me was missing. I felt like I was ignoring all the parts of my nature that make me unique. I wasn’t happy. I started to do all the things I wanted and people said “you’re not committed” and that hurt, because if anything, I’m super committed to anything I put my mind too.
If you’re like me and you have a lot of ideas and interests, I say go for it. I say go for it 150% and don’t listen to what other people say. I say show them you can be successful doing all of the things your heart desires, because when you do that you are fully living and honoring all parts of you, not just halfway existing. Make time to take breaks, slow down and pace yourself. Learn how to manage your time so you don’t feel depleted or that you can’t keep up. You can do it—and if you need, I can help you.
Don’t listen to the naysayers, because more than likely, they are just uncomfortable with the fact that you are doing what is you really want and they don’t have the courage to do that yet. Encourage them to do the same. Show them how it’s done.
Be brave. Be beautiful. Be you. Be the shining star you are—complete and whole.
You can do more than one thing, for you are everything all in one.
