Which permeates and nourishes all like a fragrance.
May we be liberated from death for the sake of immortality,
Even as the cucumber is severed from bondage to the creeper.
The ultimate goal of yoga is to find liberation from suffering and unity with the Divine. This is done by extensive practice and meditation and is a goal that many of us, despite our best efforts, may never achieve until death. To achieve liberation while living is to be a jivanmukta. Like the cucumber being severed from the vine, so too the jivanmukta is liberated from the suffering of the human world and is truly free.
Chanting this mantra will not eliminate your suffering all together, however, it may give you pause and consideration to the egoic details of life that ensnare our souls while we are living. To practice this mantra is to clear away these sufferings so that we may become free in life as we are in death. One may chant this mantra to ask for liberation from sufferings, for those that are recently departed, or on one’s birthday as a celebration of life’s purpose; to attain liberation in this lifetime.
